Wright Flyers Model Airplane Club

HomeHistory/General Info

History

The club was formed in 1998 around a nucleus of members from a defunct Wentzville club.  Flying began at The Christian Children’s Ministry (later renamed Camp Kavod) in Wright City.

In 2000, the club moved to our present flying field on Godt Road in Wright City.  The field is a closed landfill under the control of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR),  We have a formal Memorandum of Agreement with the DNR that allows us to use the site as a flying field provided we keep the improved areas maintained and do not disrupt the landfill cover.  The club has continuously invested in improvements to the field and member amenities.  All new improvements require the approval of the DNR (maintenance of existing improvements does not require DNR approval).  We now have a smoother, grass runway, two shade structures, picnic tables, chairs, BBQ grills, mowers, set-up benches, and a port-a-potty.  A safety fence provides protection for pilots along the flight line.

Membership

The club’s membership averages 50 members spanning six decades in age.  Members are drawn from about a 25 mile radius of Wright City, and include the communities of Wright City, Innsbrook, Warrenton, Troy, Moscow Mills, Foristell, Jonesburg, Union, New Florence, Wentzville, Lake Saint Louis, O’Fallon, Dardenne Prairie, St. Peters, St. Charles, and Foley. Several members have been with the club since its current charter, and at least one member was in the original Wentzville club.

Activities

The club meets monthly to discuss business, review current activities, and plan future events. Summer meetings are held at the flying field and cold weather meetings are held at the Wright City library.  A Christmas party is held each December for members and their families, funded primarily by the club.

Flying events are held approximately once a month at the club field, usually with a lunch provided by the club.

Pilot Training

The Wright Flyers Club participates in the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Introductory Pilot program, and offers this program to prospective members.  This free program allows a person interesting in learning to fly to receive pilot training for 90 days without joining the AMA or the club.  Under this program, a person may fly under the supervision of a Club Instructor using a “buddy box”. This training is provided year round, using club-owned trainer aircraft, on an appointment basis to ensure availability of an instructor.
